Atomic Learning
Posted on August 3rd, 2010 No comments
When busy teachers like you have a question about how to do something within an application, look first to Atomic Learning. Our District subscribes to this helpful collection of short, task-specific, how-to screencasts (video recordings of computer screen) . The videos are typically three minutes or less. For example, have a look at the Getting Started portion for Discovery Education Streaming (another resource to which the District subscribes) tutorials:
- Discovery Education streaming
-
- A. Getting Started
You can access Atomic Learning through VINCent. Access is automatically granted from within the District network, but you will need a username and password to view them from home. Contact me if you would like the home login information and I’ll happily send it to you.

Separate Forums for Individual Students using Moodle
Posted on July 23rd, 2010 No commentsProblem: A teacher recently asked if there was an easy way to set up a private forum for each of her students that is visible to only the student and the teacher.
Solution: Use Moodle’s group feature to achieve this.
It might be desirable to have a private forum where only an individual student and the teacher can hold a discussion. This is quite possible using Moodle, and not too difficult to set up.
Assumption:
- Students have enrolled in the course. If they haven’t, the teacher will have to either manually enroll the student or wait until the student has enrolled in the course.
Step One – Creating the forum
- On the course main page, turn on editing.
- Enter the forum title and directions as desired:

- Select “Separate groups” under Group mode in the Common module settings:

Step Two – Setting up groups
In order for each student to have a private for, it is necessary to create a group for each individual student and add the student to the group.
- Access the Groups page:

- Create a new group and add a user to the group:

- The teacher will have the capability of seeing and conversing with all students:

That’s it! A student will only see his or her posts and the replies of the teacher that are made on the student’s thread, but a teacher will be able to see the work of all students. Pretty nifty!
